Do you think the moon was literally split in half?
Do Muslims believe the moon was literally split in half 1400 years ago? Or was it just an illusion?
Salaam alykum,
I will try to keep this as short as possible:
In 54:1 when the moon is said to have split, The Qur’an uses A) the past tense to denote future actions, especially in the case of B) where classical commentators like Zamakhshari (among many others) affirm that this ayah refers to a cataclysmic event that will illustrate the end times. C) The dissent to this aforementioned position is that many scholars refer to the reports of The Prophet’s contemporaries to this being a physical act, which they underline is possible via lunar eclipse.
So that is the dispute on how to tackle this concept in The Qur’an by the scholars of Qur’an.
I pray this reaches you and your families in the best of health and Iman, insha Allah.
