Does Islam allow women to be judges? Part 1
Question:
Not to rain on your parade but the concept of appointing female Islamic judges is still considered highly controversial and impermissible by all major schools of Islamic thought. Since you consider yourself a ‘tradiionalist’ I’m surprised that you would support something that is considered unacceptable by most Muslim traditionalists and most of the Muslim world.
Salaam alykum,
Imam Abu Hanifa did not find it controversial. He argued, quite famously, that because women were permitted to be witnesses in the court, that qualified them to also be judges.
That’s the tradition.
I pray this reaches you and your families in the best of health and Iman, insha Allah.
